Minneriya National Park

Minneriya hosts Asia's largest gathering of Asian elephants, with up to 300 giants congregating around its ancient reservoir during the dry season (July to October). This spectacular phenomenon, known as 'The Gathering', offers unparalleled opportunities to witness multiple herds interacting, feeding, and socializing on the emerging grasslands of the receding reservoir.

The park's compact size and open terrain create exceptional photography conditions, with clear views of elephants against dramatic backdrops of ancient water bodies and distant mountains. Beyond elephants, the grasslands support large populations of spotted deer, sambar, and rarely seen muntjac, while the reservoir edges attract impressive concentrations of water birds, including painted storks and pelicans.

What sets Minneriya apart is its predictable elephant sightings and the unique spectacle of family herds crossing the ancient reservoir bed. The park's location within the Cultural Triangle makes it perfectly positioned for combining wildlife viewing with visits to nearby UNESCO World Heritage sites.
